Why they were so highly valued

Returned to the city in the middle of the day. So this afternoon's exercise was a walk in the Waima area. Lots of young Kauri trees . The one in the centre of this photo, demonstrates how quickly they became very tall, and straight. The English navy valued them as masts for their sailing ships in the 19th century. There was massive tree felling in the Waitakeres to supply the English navy, and also to provide Kauri timber for building houses; the bigger trees for that.
