Friarside Chapel

I've walked along this old railway path in Rowlands Gill a number of times but never noticed this chapel in ruins before. It must have been the lack of foliage on the trees and the sun shining on the sandstone that drew my eye to it. A Google search revealed that it's a 14th Century chapel which would have been attached to a hospital. The monk here would have made sure that torches were lit to guide people safely along the river between Jarrow & Blanchland. It is now a scheduled ancient monument on privately owned land so can only be visited on heritage days.
