A new skill

I’ve developed the skill of wasting time doing not a lot!!

I realised that the 1921 census records for Scotland will be released later this year and dug out the family tree records that I had researched in the early 2000’s. Thanks to Scotland’s People I got back through 9 generations to 1756 on my Mum’s side of the family.

I’m interested to see the 1921 census in relation to my mother, who was born, and grandmother who died about this time. It’s finding out where they lived, who care for my mother and what occupations the family members had at that time.

Earlier generations of the family lived and worked in farming in Banffshire and I got hold of the book in the picture, second hand, to understand more about the lives of hired labour and their accommodation. It’s not an easy book to follow, I dip in and out of it.

What I found in doing this is the high incidence of TB or Phthisis (as it was called in those days) in this community in those years, early 1900’s. 5 generations back James and Margaret had 12 children, Margaret and 6 children died of TB.

I found the poster in extras. Just think that if you change the font and the style of clothes, the advice still stands these days.

If I want to get on with things I need to put these folders back in the blanket box until later in the year.
