Having failed to unscrew the casing on the printer (it has those strange star headed screws for which I have no tool) I resorted to the same method as caused the problem ....... a damned good dunt.
It seemed to work - the casing jumped back into place and it even did some printing.
I think I must have scared it.

I contacted Mr & Mrs Mac this evening to try and arrange a get together as it has been a while.
It turns out they have had the plague and will not  be allowed to see anyone until next weekend.

Bummer. Not the best start to the new year for them.
