Icy Walk
Knew better than to try anything too ambitious today, so I just went up to Great Notch and came back around via One-Mile Rock.
The sounds of a cold hike can be mesmerizing. First the muffled effect created by layers of head coverings and the noisy racket of boots crunching on ice and synthetic fibers scraping against each other as you move along can numb the brain and shrink your world down to a little bubble just around you. Then, if you stop for a moment and uncover your ears, the softest sounds can jump out of the stillness with a clarity and sharpness unlike anything you experience in summer.
Not the kind of thing you can spend too long appreciating though.
