Wild carrot seed head
Yet another seed head that's worth getting close to. Quite a few heads of Wild Carrot, Daucus carota, seem to spend the winter closed up like this so there is a mass of seeds held inside. I wonder if this is a mechanism for stretching out the time when the seeds are scattered and therefore increasing the chances of successful dispersal and germination. Clever things, these common plants!
