Footage of the conditions in Romanian orphanages sent me there on my first international teaching assignment. Unfortunately, I was not up to the challenge at that time and my appointment only lasted for a few months. Still, it was an eye-opening experience. 

In reality, just as in fiction, a seemingly never ending procession of evil men, and sometimes women, have triumphed for a while before being ultimately vanquished by positive agents of change. But, as Thomas Jefferson said, "The price of freedom is eternal vigiliance," so, regrettably, our time in the sun is never permanent.

However, I am stupid idealistic enough to believe that good will continue to triumph over evil. So, to all those tin-pot Napoleons out there, be warned, "Flash Gordon will save every one of us.
