Mystery object

I found this little object in the innards of Grandad’s old His Master’s Voice record player. At first I thought somebody had lost their cross. Then further inspection showed something soldered on to the back, and what looks like little flecks of gold and embedded wiring on the front.
It is 3.5 cm x 2.5cm.
