Eyam
Day 5 of Peak District holiday
It was a really wet and yukky day today so we decided to have a lazy morning in the cottage. By early afternoon though I was going a bit stir crazy so we went out for a drive. There are some lovely, quaint villages in the area so we admired them from the confines of our car. I wanted to pay a visit to Eyam as from what I'd read about it, it seems to have a very interesting history, mainly due to the plague outbreak there in 1665.
It's a fantastic looking village - you can sense all the history seeping out from all the buildings. Many of them have plaques on them with details of plague victims who used to live there. It must be amazing for the current residents to live somewhere with so much local history (although no doubt also rather annoying to have people like me studying the houses and taking photos of them)! If it had been a nicer day I could have spent much longer wandering around but the heavens opened up again, so we've come back to the cottage for a quiet night in.
