My mother-in-law's new house has a lot of pine panels. Pretty much all the loft rooms are covered in these cheap knotty pine panels. They have been stained and given a cheap varnish effect - without a sanding as they are all as rough as sandpaper... For the stairwell we applied two coats of white matt finish base coat, and two coats of a satin finish sand colour. I don't dislike pine panels myself, but the typical Breton dark wood colour style is really dismal - brown isn't my colour and dark brown is definitely not my idea of a good colour.
