The ruin Batenburg
A stone that once sat above the gate of the castle states that Batenburg was built in the year 327 on the remains of a Roman temple. Evidence of this has never been found. However, the history of Batenburg goes back to the middle of the 12th century. This makes it one of the oldest castles in Gelderland. Now a ruin of it remains.
Initially, Batenburg Castle consisted of a square tuff tower built on a motte. That is a hill, which has been built on an existing river dune. Around 1350 a round brick defensive wall was built around the tower. It was destroyed around 1500 and rebuilt after 1540. Three protruding semicircular towers and a gatehouse were added to this ring wall in the second half of the 16th century. The largest of these towers, the Bronckhorstertoren, is still largely standing. The cellar with embrasures in particular has been well preserved.
Unfortunately the gate was locked, we weren't allowed in... (more in the extra)... It was a cold and wet day, after the ruin we went home to watch F1 and saw how Max became World Champion F1... Yeahhhhhhh...
