Budding Beauty

Our first medronheiro (Arbutus unedo, or strawberry tree in English) has budded, can't wait to see the pretty pink flowers. A native to the Mediterranean, Portugal is the largest producer, as they say, because others haven't opened their eyes to it yet. Very fire resistant, beautiful wood to carve, medicinal leaves, and good fruit, as well as being ornamental, with the red tipped, glossy leaves, red stems, pinkish bell-shaped blossom and red and yellow fruit.

The main use we've seen, though, is making spirit from the fruit, which can be delicious, but often way above the legal percentage of alcohol. Apparently, the authorities turn a blind eye, as it's so valued. You know you're trusted and liked when the bar owner pulls out his hidden stash and offers you a glass of it.

Gratefuls:
- the highlight of the day, an unexpected visit from Margreth and Göran, bringing gifts, so lovely to have guests!
- finishing The Help, by Kathryn Stockett, when I couldn't sleep in the night (why??), which I found a brave and insightful book, though I understand the controversy... but heck, why get in a tizz about someone's hard work; you don't have to agree with it...
- the excitement building at No. 28...
