Izmir Protestant Church
I am back in Izmir, Turkey again, visiting family. I had a chance to visit Alsancak where was once an important port, La Punta. It was a Levantine centre but majority of it was destroyed in the Smyrna fire. There are many churches around and old houses.
The area was named as Alsancak, means red flag referring to the Turkish flag, after the Turkish Independence war with nationalist motivations. As a result of this war, Greeks had fled Asia-Minor. Izmir still is the most liberal city in Turkey regarding alcohol consumption and the inclusion of women in social life. This heritage obviously comes from our old neighbours.
Love to all.
