"A Little More Nostalgia"...
.....Not too many miles away from where I was born - there lies within the sand now, this proud old vessel named "The Ethel"...a three masted brig.. one is missing here..
It was wrecked on the coastline at Reef Head, near West Cape, Yorke Peninsula, South Australia, on January 4th, 1904. We have several old pictures of this old wreck.
There is quite a saga to the story of "The Ethel", and not far from her, another "stolen" steamer called "The Ferret" - which has an even more intriguing story attached to it - lies just a little way out to sea, wrecked in 1920.
A few years ago, on a low tide - we could see its boiler sticking out of the sea..
But I won't sound too droll with my description of their tales, so I shall move on to when I was a child and when we used to travel down to see the wreck of the "Ethel" - and we could walk inside part of it's huge hull - all that was left after 40 years then, the rest eventually sinking into the sand with the wild seas crashing against the shoreline there most of the time.
I do believe within this past year, huge storms uncovered part of the old wreck exposing the hull once again, which would have been great to see..
A beautiful beach amongst the mounds of seaweed, we'd scamper down to see the wreck below, from the tall cliffs above, no one there at all - not sure how I got up again... The sea thrashing against the cliffs around the shoreline corner was so loud, it appeared deafening and frightening to we small children, whilst we searched for shark eggs - and sinking amongst the wet seaweed mounds. It was known to be a popular beach with big sharks...
So many shark eggs we remember there, not many shells for us as they would all be broken - just shark eggs - and today - my parents, particularly my Father - would be mortified at how now popular this same beach has become.... with Surfers....
