Sepilok
Backblip
We spent a day at the Orang-utan Rehabilitation Center in Sepilok. A real treat to get to see these animals up close. A tragedy to think that in our lifetime the reality is that in the wild they will most likely be extinct. The scourge of Borneo in my opinion is palm oil plantations.
The jungle is literally vanishing and being replanted with these trees which offer no form of ecosystem whatsoever. It is horrific to see. Borneos main attractions are the jungle wildlife and the diving and both of these things are being virtually massacred by palm oil production and the decimation of the reef systems. I am glad we got to see it when I did and I hope that the government acts quickly enough in order to preserve what remains.
