Culross

We had business in Dunfermline this morning and afterwards pottered home via Culross. This is an historic village and much-visited but we found parts that had been overlooked - literally.

Parking in the western carpark we walked along the shoreline path, bordering the railway line, as far as the eastern carpark and back into the village. There were several dog-walkers and one we passed again, who advised us of steps that led to a viewpoint over the Hanging gardens. We walked up Mid Causeway (left photo) as far as the square with its Mercat Cross as far as the turn,  where we discovered the Lockit Well (far right) a historical water supply to the village, with a lever that could be locked (=lockit).
 From here direction signs to the garden (centre photo) took us to a path looking over the terraced garden, all the way down to the back of the Palace (position on map). We descended via Bessie Bar Steps to Culross Palace. There is a sundial on the south face, sadly lacking a gnomon, but one on the building further east is intact, though slightly bent, reading some 25 minutes fast (bottom row).

It being mid-afternoon the shadows were elongating and several points of interest were half-shaded; also several buildings were closed for the season, however there is still plenty to see.
