Bodmin beacon
Walking the dogs and the beacon caught my eye as the sun hit it. The beacon is in the heart of a nature reserve in Bodmin. It stands 144ft high made of cornish granite. Commemorating general sir Walter Raleigh Gilbert, an army officer in the British East India Company, which once had a monopoly on half the world's trade during the construction of the British Empire. While in modern times the action of such a company would be frowned upon, during the time of Gilbert's life to be a part of the British East India Company's own army was very much an honour and he became celebrated in life and commemorated extravagantly in death.
