Work in Progress
Two days ago we laid this coir matting on the bank below the hedge at the end of our garden. We've fixed it with switches of hazel and plastic pegs and the rain has helped it to adhere to the soil in places. We hope that it will stabilise the soil, preventing erosion and loss to the lane below. The stones, scavenged from a lady's pile of rubble, should reduce the strength of water flowing in the gutter of the lane when it rains heavily.
We aim to plan native hedge "whips" which will hold the soil once they've grown a bit; then the coir can deteriorate into the soil, its work done. Let's hope that tractors and vans don't hit the bank and damage our work.
We have taken several hours over the work on the hedge and bank and many neighbours have stopped to chat and offer advice, some of it quite helpful :-)
