Diary of an Edinburgher

The Power of our dog…

Zoe came to visit, as she was having her hair cut in the neighbourhood. But I had an eye test so missed her. No worries - we’ll visit before Christmas.

The eye test took an hour - all sorts of fancy equipment. So thorough. What a nice job, I thought… peaceful, relaxed, interesting, as well as really helping people. So I need new long distance glasses, and he led me to the expensive lenses. But I went to the cheapest ones - they’re not a fashion item, just for driving. £19 is pretty good value for an hour’s consultation. I’m so grateful to the NHS for this free service.

I decided to walk home from there - uphill! JR and Archie came to meet me at the Links. Archie skipping along with a poo bag on his paw, which worked well.

My cardio doctor rang. There was good news and not so good news re last week’s ECG. The good news is that my heart was doing all the right things while under stress. The not so good news is that it’s just general wear and tear, and nothing much can be done. *sigh*

It was so sunny in the afternoon, so I took Archie up to the graveyard while listening to an ABC ‘Conversations’ about a young Afghan boy, Abbas Nazari, and his family, who escaped from the Taliban in the late 90s. The family, along with hundreds of others boarded an unseaworthy boat to Australia. The boat was about to sink in the Indian Ocean, but a Norwegian cargo ship, the MV Tampa, rescued them. Australia did not allow them to enter. Helen Clark the NZ PM at the time, welcomed many of them. The young boy, became a Fulbright scholar, and is certainly repaying his adopted country’s kindness.

Later, we watched a film - ‘The Power of the Dog’ - the new film by Jane Campion, filmed in NZ, but set in Montana. It ‘dropped’ on Netflix today. Really enjoyed it, and would have enjoyed it even more on the big screen, I think. A typical Campion film - slow burner, attention to detail, atmospheric. Must watch ‘The Piano’ again, I noticed it was on Netflix.
