On the Insulin Trail
It’s not well known that an Aberdonian (and FP of Aberdeen Grammar School) played a vital part in the discovery of insulin. J J Macleod was a physiologist who worked in Aberdeen and latterly in Canada where along with Banting and Best he discovered insulin. He shared a Nobel Prize with Banting but his role in this discovery was mired in controversy and he never really received the plaudits he deserved. Recently the value of his work has been re evaluated and a walking tour of Aberdeen has been developed covering some points of local interest relating to his life and work. He returned to Aberdeen in 1928 as Professor of Physiology and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. More info here.
