Barnbougle legend
According to a legend Sir Roger Moubray, was killed while on the Crusades and back home at Barnbougle Castle here his faithful hound began to howl uncontrollably at that moment before eventually dying of grief. Since then his hound can sometimes be heard howling especially on dark windy nights at nearby Hound Point. Another legend says that a man appears with a howling dog on the shore prior to the death of a Laird of Barnbougle.
And ever when Barnbougle's lords
Are parting this scene below
Come hound and ghost to this haunted coast
With death notes winding slow.
Barnbougle Castle was originally built in the 13th century for the Mowbray family. Many years later it was almost entirely rebuilt in 1881 after falling in such disrepair that waves were sometimes coming into the castle. Meanwhile the Rosebery family had moved in 1817 to the nearby comfortable Dalmeny House.
This morning although the vast number of birds wading the sands at the low tide were very noisy any dogs that we saw on the beach were quiet so if there is still a laird he can continue to live today without fear.
Edinburgh Castle and Arthur's Seat can be seen in the distance.
