From Klein Slangkop
Today the south-easterly wind was howling, low clouds scudding over the top of the hills, white horses playing out to sea. The fog lingered but Slangkop Lighthouse, also known as the Kommetjie Lighthouse, is the strongest and tallest cast-iron lighthouse on the South African coast, and protects this coastline. Built on the instruction of the then governor of the Cape of Good Hope, Sir Walter Francis Hely-Hutchinson, its role was to decrease the number of shipwrecks on the Kommetjie shoreline and coastal areas. The views from the top are include beach and coastal views of Kommetjie and Long beach, and although the climb to the top of this lighthouse is steep, it's well worth it for the views.
