today's tasks were carried out between mind-cleansing doses of this excellent modesty blaise novel. i've read them at least half a dozen times since picking them up at some point years ago. despite being written in the 1960s-1970s they are, like ian fleming's james bond novels, only dated in some details; the stories are great page-turning adventure thrillers. leave your disbelief at the door, to be sure, but they are tightly plotted and sparely written in a way that dan brown can only dream about (in fact, having read 'the da vinci code', i don't think he has the brains to dream of something this well written!).
