Roald Amundsen and his four men....
Olav Bjaaland, Sverre Hassel, Oscar Wisting and Helmer Hansen in stones, standing at the Maritime Museum in Oslo, looking towards the home of Amundsen where they started their journey onboard the ship Fram (Fram today placed in one of the buildings behind the men) towards the South Pole. On October 1911 they set out from their base "Framheim" (Home of Fram) on skis with their dogs to reach the South Pole point which they managed on December the 14th. They planted their flag and left a tent there with a letter to Robert Falcon Scott who with his men reached the pole point 5 weeks later. Amundsen and his men arrived back at Framheim on January the 26th 1912, after having been skiing 2600 km in 99 days. Unfortunately Scott and all his 16 men died on their way back to their base. Even if Amundsen became the first to reach the South Pole point, both men and their teams will always have a place in history as the most brave explores of that time. Today they all are admired and respected by those of us who know their story.
