Sunday lunch
B, C and baby Ivy came to lunch which had to be quite early. We had a very jolly time and after lunch went into Canterbury to visit the cathedral and I was so glad we did. It’s not as beautiful as some of the other cathedrals I know but is obviously fascinating historically. And it’s impossible not to be moved when you’re standing at the spot of Thomas a Beckett’s murder and to be impressed at the quiet drama of the single candle that stands at the spot of his shrine, destroyed by Henry VIII. But there’s also a vivid Anthony Gormley, the tomb of The Black Prince, some fantastic medieval stained glass with a images of early pilgrims plus a two legged dragon and a series of small scale models of different cathedrals made in the early 19th century laid out by distance from Canterbury. Hours of fun.
