Tiny Fern

I practically levitated out of bed this morning as a load of rocks hit the empty steel bottom of a dump truck at 7:30 this morning. We have given up trying to figure out what the master plan over there is although it seems almost as if they are trying to lower the building site to the elevation of the road.

Dana and Blake joined us for our walk above Spring Lake this morning. School is out for the whole Thanksgiving week. The bumper to bumper tree trimming trucks and a chipper were not part of the plan, but the Conservation Corps, which is clearing out burned brush and trees, stopped work as we edged past the trucks. It didn't stop me almost getting brained by a falling rock, and the young guy directing traffic asked me if I was ok.  He said even if they stop work, they can't keep the rocks from falling down the steep slope above the road where they are working. I don't know exactly where the rock came from or where it went, but he must have seen me duck. By the time we circled around after our explorations up to the quarry, they had put up a road closed sign. They may be up there for awhile as there is a lot of clearing to be done.

The lush ferns coming in on the shady side of the mountain are a welcome sight. The ones in today's picture had just emerged from the forest duff, and the juxtaposition with the fallen leaves gives an idea of how small they are.

We left the dogs in the car at Trail House and laid plans for Thanksgiving dinner and watched videos of hair-raising vertical skiing and urban skateboarding on Trail House's big screens before returning to the grinding and beeping that accompanies our days at home. The tile guys are now scheduled to come next Monday and we actually found David and Greg at Dana's house when we went to pick her up. Greg said his wife looks like she was in a prize fight but is otherwise ok.

I'm almost finished with the quilt top and thinking I might just hand tie it rather than taking it to the quilter. It's too busy to have another layer of pattern superimposed on it and I might just hang it on the wall....if I had any wall space to hang it on. Something will occur to me.
