Grace Remembered

A few years ago, I found the grave of some of my ancestors. Most of the surface had sheared off, but enough could be read at the foot to confirm that this was the right grave. Immediately above were the words "Grace who died in infancy." This was the first I knew of her, my great-great-great- aunt. Subsequently she turned out to have been born on 31st August 1834, only a few weeks after her parents' marriage.

Today I returned. It was easy to find the grave - it jumped out as the only one with a traffic cone beside it. The surface had deteriorated further and you could no longer decipher the name of the child who died in infancy (extra). But I know that it was Grace and she'll be remembered for a little longer.
