Bifana

Apparently bifa or bifana (meaning slices of beef) is a term the Portuguese use to describe the British. I am sure it derives from tourists in the Algarve not using a high enough factor of sunscreen, and getting rather pink.

Today at Tunduru Gardens there were a lot of wedding parties. At times they throw themselves into dance with a fabulous absence of self-consciousness. They break into song - men and women young and old - without worrying about their voice, their moves or whatever the hell anyone around might think (which is never bad or judgemental, due to the exact psyche that leads people to behave freely in the first place).

My experience of UK culture is of prizing skilled performers and the mentality of not making a fool of oneself, over the liberating experience of doing something harmless if the mood dictates it. This is one of the aspects of Mozambican culture that I like.
