Diary of an Edinburgher

Shopping!

Becky took Archie out this morning - it was a crisp, sunny day, but rather cooler than of late. I was able to spend time reading the match reports from yesterday over my porridge. It’s been such a treat this autumn - all those top games.

As Archie had been out in the morning, we decided to pop into town without him, leaving him with his bone. I suddenly took a notion to do some shopping, which doesn’t happen very often, so JR was keen to capitalise on it.

I managed to stay focussed for two shops, both favourites which - crucially - have great soundtracks playing. I got a couple of items, actually, before I lost interest. Suddenly I heard a pipe band! Aha! A diversion. Yes, several different bands and people were marching along, some in national costumes (and some just whacky) to celebrate Diwali. (Extras) The new hotel, ‘The Turd’, or the ‘Walnut Whip’, can be seen in the background, glowing golden in the afternoon sun. It’ll take a while to get used to it on our skyline.

After that, the shopping urge was gone. So a decent coffee and chocolate brownie were enjoyed at Wellington Cafe. We got in and had a seat just before an absolute surge.

I then came home, but JR’s shopping urge was still strong. The bus driver was chatty, and when I got up to alight, I mentioned to him how my nearest bus stop, which has been there for about 20 years, has suddenly been removed. He apologised, as he’d been looking for it, but I assured him that I didn’t hold him responsible. When we got to the next stop, he said, proudly,
]i]‘This is my first day out on my own!’

I congratulated him and wished him luck in his new job - he will have many many frustrations. Driving round Edinburgh all day must be fraught, with ever-changing routes because of never-ending roadworks, hold ups, blockages and probably rather a lot pi**ed off passengers who have just realised they’ve lost their bus stop…

JR came home later, well pleased with her finds. A successful day all round.
