Trompe-l'oeil at Petworth House
A lovely day walking in the grounds of Petworth House today and then a nice cup of tea and a piece of cake in the restaurant followed by a walk around inside this lovely house.
There are some exquisite artworks in the house and I took plenty of images, but this image taken by chance at the end of the tour just leapt of the screen at me. The images you see on the walls are just those - images on flat plaster. None of the columns is real, the door at the top of the stairs is not real, none of the mouldings is real. It really is an extraordinary piece of illusion.
It would have been lovely to see it without the health and safety strings, but it's a delight that the National Trust allows you to take pictures inside.
I thoroughly recommend visiting Petworth House in West Sussex and seeing this for yourself.
