Polling Day…

Today I did a stint at the polling station for the deferred vote on Douzeniers (parish council members).
This doesn’t attract the voters like the election for Deputies but I was slightly taken aback by one chap who asked whether there was a vote for Constable. On being told no, just Douzeniers he said he wouldn’t bother and left again.
This is the Constables Office; a wonderful historic building which was originally the town house of the Le Marchant family. One of the Sone, John Gaspard Le Marchant was an Army officer and among his other achievements he set up the training establishment which eventually became Sandhurst.
But this photograph isn’t a Le Marchant. There are rooms named after many famous Guernseymen and this is the Brock Room. The photograph is Sir Isaac Brock the hero of Upper Canada. He managed to get the Shawnee Warrior Tecumeh to support his troops; possibly because he was able to communicate with him in Guernesiais which Tecumeh was able to understand; presumable because of the French heritage in Canada.
Interestingly as I was typing this I noticed a post in Facebook referring to Guernsey Girl - Upper Canada Cheese Company. Presumably the Guernsey Girl being a Guernsey cow. uppercanadacheese.com
