guarding the hibernaculum

since it got nice out 4 days ago the carpenter bees have been going CRAZY. walking down calder alley, which runs behind my house, is like walking through a bee warzone. These guys don't mess around. This particular one has set up camp right in front of our front door, and every time a wayward fly or bee or hornet or wasp or yellowjacket happens into its territory it zips off to scare it away.

One thing I learned today: it's really difficult to take pictures of bees when they're flying around through the air.
