Forbes floods

Forbes is a country town in the Central West of NSW, with a population of about 8,000. Established in 1861 during the gold rush, Forbes is a substantial rural centre. It has pleasant parks and colonial buildings and the bushranger Ben Hall is buried in Forbes cemetery.

We know Forbes well, because our dear friend Babb lived, first on a property 70kms south west of the town, and later in a retirement village in Forbes. Almost every camping trip we took started or ended with a visit to Babb.

Today Forbes is in the news because major floods are expected. The Lachlan River has already peaked at 12m at Cowra, 90kms from Forbes, and the town is preparing for the flood waters to reach it tomorrow. Forbes last experienced major floods in 2016, when much of the town was inundated.

Our favourite camp site used to be beside Lake Forbes on the Lachlan River. It is probably under water already and if it isn’t, it soon will be. In the extras Daisy 2, our favourite caravan, and Wombat 2, our favourite tow vehicle, are camped beside the lake.
