Kathryn sent me a message the other day asking if I wanted some ideas for Isobel's Christmas presents. "Yes." I said, always open to help with that. "She'd like a purple ukulele." ,said Kathryn. "Like this one?" , I asked, rapidly firing off a picture of the one zipped into its case which is sitting in the corner of the bedroom.
You have to laugh! I got it from somebody on our community Web site during lockdown. I thought I should be able to teach myself to play. Sadly I've never got around to it. Now, I'm not being a cheapskate, I'm happy to buy one for her - I'm not actually convinced this one is actually any good mind you I've never been good at tuning stringed instruments. When Kathryn and Ali were learning violin (which they did up to grade eight and five respectively) I was so glad of their good ear. You have to laugh though, what are the chances of having not only a ukulele in the cupboard, but a purple one at that! Kathryn couldn't believe it.
Today I had a day at home, doing plenty but having my own agenda which was the first time for a long time. I started by cleaning out the fish tank which was long overdue (sorry fish). I've saved myself a fortune in aquarium plants this year by growing my own in the pond. The plants I use are surface plants with no need for rooting. They normally cost me about £12 each water change as the fish seem to think they are called salad! I bought too many one time so I slung them in the pond to keep them alive till needed and forgot about them. I've been self sufficient ever since with an unending supply of lovely, healthy, green plants. I'll have to see if they survive the frosts but looking good so far and there's loads in the pond.
Next I cooked a batch of coconut pyramids complete with chocolate on the top. While they were cooking I tidied up a cupboard and cleared out my messy utensils drawer.
Is it only those whose mum used to be a Tupperware lady who have cupboards of the stuff? Mum died in 1979 and I've never had to buy any. I did buy some of the systema click lid boxes as they are very handy, but I didn't actually need any. I've still got the kitchen devil knives she gave me too, as an engagement present, they were one of the party gifts in the early '70s.
Drawer tidied and pyramids cooked I decided to spoil Colin with a batch of oatcakes. Topped up the brandy level on my Christmas cake too. Wouldn' t do to forget that!
We're going to watch Shetland this evening, I may fall asleep.
