Anti-Bedroom Tax national day of action: Norwich
A callout was made for people throughout the country to demonstrate today against the foul, ill-thought out so called 'Bedroom Tax' which is being implemented from the 1st April and on a bitterly cold Easter Saturday afternoon over 100 people met for an hour on the steps of City Hall to make their views known. Here is Liz, a fellow activist that I met recently, with a wonderful caricature of David Cameron, our Prime Minister.
Able bodied people, disabled people, young people, middle aged people, elders, people with children all gathered to share their views, to chant and to speak. We had no formal speakers lined up, this was an open forum for whoever wanted to to take the megaphone and address the gathering.
We had also read in the press that local MPs were saying that they had had very little correspondence or communication from people expressing concern about the tax. So, to make things easier for people to contact their MP we produced a handout and made multiple copies for people to take away which provided all the contact details for the MPs. We want the MPs to be literally swamped with correspondence. We want to hound them into listening to us. We will not go away.
The protest was peaceful, vocal and powerful. It was a great location with lots of people passing by wanting to know more, and cars honking their horns in support.
These protests are not going to stop. They will continue, up and down the country, and there will be mass gatherings in London. The next demonstration in Norwich is planned for 13th April in the city centre.
The people are angry. And, on this matter, we are all in it together.
