I couldn't get to the big ride to the big march today, nor even get to the Meadows to wave and photograph them off, but I fully support their intent and applaud all who attended and organised. Apparently there's barely any official mention of active travel amongst the glossy posters and stalls for electric cars. Unfortunately, me doing a medium-sized shop (trailer/rucksack only, no panniers, so only about 60l of stuff) isn't reducing the number of unnecessary short car journeys being made as I'd always cycle or walk to do my shopping anyway. If you've never tried it or not tried for a while, give it a go. Having a car sitting ready outside your house makes it too easy to just hop in... the up-front and annualised costs hide the effective cost of even a simple trip, which is why many people.use a car instead of a coat, an umbrella, a bag or even a reasonably-sized pocket. Especially in a small city like Edinburgh, where virtually everywhere is walkable and certainly cycleable.
