Earthquake house of Shaky Toon (Comrie)

This wee building, erected in 1874 to house a seismoscope, is believed to be the first ever purpose-built earthquake observatory. It replaced earlier instruments to record seismic activity in the area around Comrie since 1840. The earthquake house is also believed to be the smallest listed building in Europe. We peered through its window after leaving our hotel to see the modern technology that picks up tremors in the twenty-first century (the most recent was on 29th August 2021), plus an antique mallet seismometer on the floor.

This was our first stop on our drive home to Edinburgh through murk and rain this afternoon. The second was the Scottish antiques and arts centre in Doune, where I bought a Chelsea pottery dish.

I hardly slept last night (due to knee pain) and wanted to be in good spirits for the arrival of guests this evening, so I sloped off to bed for a lie-down as soon as I could after we unpacked. I felt a lot better after an hour in bed, and ready to prepare the meal for Vikki and Cameron. On the menu were Mr hazelh-safe white bean hummus; tomato orzotto with smoked venison, parma ham, and cheeses; fruit salad and Cameron-safe vegan ice cream.

We had a grand time with our guests (last seen on 27th December 2019). I was delighted that Vikki and Cameron brought the purple Le Creuset casserole dish that they barely use to swap for my red one. Now my rainbow includes red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, white, black and brown items :-)
