The Round Toll ...
... has stood in this spot at Pollokshaws since 1820. Until the 1880s it was a toll house at the junction of four roads leading into Glasgow. Tolls were abolished in the late 1880s and the building used for various purposes including as a home until until the late 50s when the whole area was redeveloped with the building ending up unused in the centre of a roundabout. Redevelopment has take place again with most of the high-rise flats being replaced by more traditional style "tenement" flats.
The top photo shows the tall flats of Cartcraigs Rd that I blipped a few days ago and the bottom photo is from the other side with the flats behind me. The Round Toll is B listed and hence of national importance architecturally.
GREAT NEWS!
Found out yesterday that the Old Stables and the Old Mill in Pollok Park are to be saved with £13M funding from the government.
The restoration and redevelopment of the A Listed but dilapidated Courtyard and Stables, and Sawmill, at Pollok Country Park will see the creation of a net-zero carbon "Living" Heritage Centre and community and visitor attraction in Pollok Country Park based around the famous Clydesdale Horses, and the development of traditional power generation into modern renewable technologies.
