The gate
At the start of a three day weekend where a lot of people are travelling, it felt appropriate to post a photo of what looks like a natural gate into autumn. But as the forecast is rather poor for the holiday I'm afraid it is going to be more of a gate out of autumn, towards wetter and colder weather, the preparation of winter! In fact for many populations of the northern hemisphere, the start and end of autumn does not necessarily coincide with the astronomical season. In Iceland for example the first day of winter is celebrated on the first saturday after the 26th week of summer (which starts the first thirsday after the 18th of april), i.e. the third or fourth saturday of october! In England autumn ended around Halloween and the old name for autumn is "Harvest" indicating it is the time to harvest fruit, vegetables and grain, something you will not do so much after october, unless you have a greenhouse. The name harvest still remains in the scandinavian languages (no./dk høst, is. haust). I think it is a beautiful name for a season.
I have no plans to travel this weekend. Italian motorways turn into endless traffic jams during short holidays so I will just travel locally (and in my mind)..weather permitting.
