Trees Hugging

I didn't hug a tree but I was impressed with the small area of forest we walked in today.  When you live with a forester it's not unusual to be taken on a walk to an area of trees that interests him.  Today it was the Eves Valley Scenic Reserve.  It is surrounded by farms but for some reason it has been spared.  It represents one of a few remaining lowland valley floor  forest remnants in the Waimea and Moutere areas.  As we sat and had our lunch I contemplated that once this area was covered in tall native trees. The blip is a Matai tree in focus and a Totara tree behind it.  The Matai is recognised easily from its grey-brown bark which flakes off in thick rounded chunks which leave marks on the trunk.  Our dinning table which I blip from time to time is made of Matai.  The posts we put in our garden are Totara.
I could have blipped many more photos.  There is a stream running through the area, bright orange fungi on growing on fallen logs, tall punga ferns and pretty views along the track.  It is the most interesting piece of bush I have been in for sometime.
