Believe it or not, this narrow gap was once the main coaching route through Petersfield. A convenient overnight stop, and the chance to refresh the horses at one of several coaching inns on the High Street, King Charles II kept his mistress at a grand house in the Square. He did like to review the fleet as often as possible!
