A Good Day

Emergency Kit - poems for strange times
As it happens it was a good day. I went to the gym for the first time and later at the doctor’s a nurse gave me my hearing back after an irrigation procedure. It reminded me of the opening of Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. Doctor Iannis cured an old man’s deafness in one ear by removing a pea stuck there since childhood.
The nurse removed a lump of wax the size of a pea from my left ear, and suddenly I could hear better than for years. Can I dispense with my hearing aids now? It will probably help with my balance which has been a cause for concern for me. Interesting to see what the volume number needed on the TV is tonight. I walked out of the surgery into the deafening sound of traffic. Apparently I have small ears and, just like Venice, narrow canals, full of gunge.
