Chunky Mushroom

Out for a walk with 2 of our neighbours 5 dogs (we provide respite care for three of them over a weekend) and came across this chunky mushroom nestling in the grass verge.  I think it was edible but when I tried to dislodge it, it was solidly attached to the ground.  It was solid, so not sure what it would have tasted like.  I left it in the ground for someone or something else.
