Limestone Waxcap

Back to Stonepit Close this afternoon to see how the fungi were doing, in preparation for a walk I'm leading next weekend. I was really pleased to see that the Limestone Waxcaps have appeared, tiny orange-red buttons which pop up on moss-covered ground, but sadly I couldn't find any Earth-tongues, which were abundant in the same area last year. They're always one of the last fungi to appear locally, and may still make it by next weekend.

One of the other star species I was hoping to show people was Pearly Webcap, which is the most delightful soft purplish-grey when it first emerges. I found a good number of them just appearing in one of the birch groves (see extra) so they should be at their peak next weekend.

I had time to visit the beech log that had such a good show of Porcelain Fungus a few weeks ago. Today you would never know that they had been there, though there was a good crop of Angel's Bonnet (see extra) emerging - lovely in its own way but not quite as spectacular as the Porcelain Fungus.
