Today at the Archives
14th century muniment chest, end panel detail. Lots of features designed to keep the church documents inside safe. The iron feet raise it off the damp floor. The lid is made from a single piece of wood to keep it airtight. And the ironwork around the overlap kept rats and mice out - they would have been after parchment as a food source. The big iron ring to make it easier to move.
