Friends of Whyte Strand
This is my “memorial rock” Friends who have enjoyed coming here many times over the years and now no more. Remember my paint pottery project at home? Well, here it is, two new tiles added today, one for Dick and one for Tom, who both died last fall. I was given the wrong size by the shop so actually painted two each, once I figured that out! :-) Can read it better large....
Dick and his wife had been coming on their little yellow sailboat starting back in the early days (early 90s) when I was still living on our sailboat before the cabin was built. And after. And then they painted the boat dark green. They would announce their arrival with a horn so I knew who was coming. I thought it was an air horn like we had but got that wrong…he blew it. Oh well. They were always helpful, cut down trees , bucked wood, or whatever was needed. Then after their boating days we lost touch. But the nice memory is there. and I renewed it over lunch last week.
And then of course our really good friend, blipper Mike’s Tom, who was an amazing woodworker and outdoor woodsman… He and Herb made our first rowing dock on floating logs with plywood on top, and he cut trees, helped build a shed, and numerous other projects He was a perfectionist and would get annoyed with Herb for using the tools and materials he had here at the island instead of getting the best. “Perfection is the enemy of good enough” (H)
He did fix up a sliding seat for the Dory and enjoyed rowing that. And he really enjoyed all the trails.
We had some good times here and will miss him.
The rock is a bit hidden ..not many see it....(see extra, the high tide comes close on this very natural beach) And who knows what will happen to it after we’re not here but I like the memories we have.
Posting this a bit early today before going to the neighbors for a chat.
