Physalis skeletons

I have three plants in one pot that have produced a wealth of fruit.  Two plants in the border have grown huge and produced very little that has ripened.  I imagine this means they don't like fertile ground if they are to fruit well.. I have taken slips for next year - has anyone else had the same experience?
