Well, in an attempt to eliminate strimming from the round of maintenance after having - quite rightly! - left large areas of grass to grow long, I've taken the plunge, done a short training workshop and bought a scythe.

Long term, it is the right decision, but there is a lot of old tufted and matted undergrowth to deal with before scything is the easier option.

However, once my skill level improves, it will always be the quieter and more satisfying one.
