Gosport
There are many theories about the origin of the name Gosport. It is widely considered that its name came from Goose. Another is Gorse. A third theory claiming a derivation from God's Port is believed to be a 19C invention but it's nevertheless an interesting story.
Legend tells of the landing in the mid 12th century of Henry de Blois, the Bishop of Winchester, caught in a fierce storm when returning from Normandy and brought ashore by local fishermen. He decreed that the place be called God's Port. These words 'God's Port Our Haven' are shown on the Gosport seal designed by local artist Martin Snape in 1922.
