Mono Monday - 19th C Inventions

In 1810, Peter Durand, an English merchant invented the tin can to be used in preserving food.  Tinned food became widespread and I remember on a trip to Antarctica in 2009 we visited a number of the early explorers huts where there was lots of provisions remaining including tinned food.  I am not sure I would eat what was in them though.    I have put some photos up in the extras.  My photos indicate we visited the hut on 14 February 2009.  It was blowing an absolute hoolie and a later attempt to visit Shackleton's hut on nearby Cape Royds was thwarted as it was felt we would all be frost bitten if we attempted a landing.  Scott's hut was erected in 1911 by the BAE for the Terra Nova expedition.  Why you would feed some 25 men cabbage in that hut is beyond me.  A cruel joke perhaps.   Colman's mustard was obviously a favourite as was Fry's cocoa.  NZ does a great job on preserving these huts.

My first extra however is the most exciting thing which has happened today (aside from getting freedoms back including being able to travel outside my LGA).   Meet Pi.  Pi is a Brittany Spaniel on the French lines.  My brother and I picked Pi up from Newy airport this afternoon.  He flew up from Melbourne.  He and my brother are now back in Sydney.   I understand he was good as gold in the car but was now running through mum's house like the Tasmania Tiger in those cartoons.

Oh and Maggy ate one of my brother's socks yesterday.   No trip to the vet needed as she threw it up this afternoon.   Ewwwwww.  I wish I could say that is definitely the last thing but with her I can't be sure.

Oh and thanks for hosting Laurie.
